Cataracts are one of the most common eye diseases in Hong Kong. It is
also the number-one cause of blindness. In 2009, there were roughly
54,000 patients waiting for cataract operations at hospitals under the
Hospital Authority. Furthermore, of those patients, up to 42,000 of them
were aged 71 and above.
As an individual becomes older, the lens of the eye starts to age and
gradually turns cloudy. The lens is responsible for focusing light onto
the retina, much like the way the lens inside a camera works. If the
lens becomes cloudy, light cannot be focused and patients suffer from
impaired vision.
